Muscular Dystrophy and Ayurveda

Genetic flaws are responsible for debilitating effects
of different forms of muscular dystrophies. Our
genetics is regulated by life forces and the later is
influenced by the cosmic forces. This is purely a
scientific and holistic understanding.

Have you ever considered alternative approach using
Ayurveda and Yoga based techniques for management of
complex diseases like Muscular dystrophy? We wish to
inform you of the promising results that we have
achieved at our wellness clinic in treating the
debilitating effects of muscular dystrophy using
Ayurveda and Yoga based techniques. The Dystrophy
clinic being run at Sanjivani wellness Bhilai India,
focuses on - (i) Reducing weight, (ii) Improving
muscle tone and functional ability in patients using
Ayurvedic Panchkarma, scientifically verified
Ayurvedic medicines, and yoga.

Ayurveda considers this condition as Mamsa-vata-kshaya
(MVK) related to Beeja dosha and impairments of
Mamsagni (muscle enzyme). It involves deranged Vata
and subsequent degeneration of muscles and structures
related to it. Ayurvedic treatment might slow or stop
the progression of muscle degeneration. A combined
strategy of age-old Til-Mash Pinda sweda (TMP),
Pizhichil, Anuvasana Vasti, Mamsagni Rasayana and
Yogic support is effective in the long-term management
of muscular dystrophies.

So far, we have treated Duchenne type, Bucker type and
Limb-Girdle type of patients with very promising
results such as (i) weight loss (ii) Decrease in blood
CPK level (iii) Relief in Pain and Stress (iv)
Decrease in walking difficulty (v) Further check on
muscle wasting and contractures. These results suggest
that there is check on further muscle destruction.

Treatment Agenda:

Muscular dystrophy is not a single disease but a group of hereditary muscle destroying disorders, vary in their inheritance pattern, age of onset, initial muscle attacked and rate of progression. It is no incurable condition, rather it is a genetic problem for which no satisfactory treatment have yet been found in any system of medicine. Dr Jain is working on this problem since 1995 and dedicating his efforts to find a suitable remedy for this horrifying disease. Also visit his article base

Rasayana drug shows promise for Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies
Research part-funded by the Ayush Samiti has shown the ability of a rasayana drug to dramatically reduce muscle weakness in patients with Limb girdle muscular dystrophy. The drug - Mamsagni - increases the amount of a protein called "utrophin" in the muscles. This protein may be able to substitute for the dystrophin that is missing in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene. This gene contains the instructions for making dystrophin protein which acts as a shock absorber to prevent damage when the muscle contracts. It is thought that utrophin, a protein naturally present in our body in small amounts, may be able to compensate for the lack of dystrophin in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy since both proteins are structurally similar and appear to have very similar functions.

Dr Mukesh D Jains' NMD clinic in Bhilai, India has been researching Mamsagni Rasayana for more than 20 years. The Ayurvedic Rasayana drug was shown to effectively increase the levels of utrophin in muscle cells. The drug was also active in the heart - a muscle that is notoriously difficult to treat by other methods such as exon skipping. The challenge was to prove that the increased levels of utrophin were of benefit to the patients. The patients were treated with Mamsagni for eight weeks and the health of their muscles compared to untreated patients. The muscles appeared to be healthier when viewed under a microscope, with less inflammation and scar tissue (fibrosis). The amount of creatine kinase in the blood was also reduced.

  10. High quality health care and low cost gives Indian Ayurveda a competitive advantage in the medical tourism industry. People with uncontrolled medical neuro-muscular conditions such as Muscular dystrophy, myopathies, Multiple sclerosis, Myasthenia gravis, Parkinson’s disease and Autism are exploring possible ayurvedic treatment now in Chhattisgarh. Sergei 13 year, Damir 14 year and Dima - 8 year from Moscow are suffering from severe DMD and getting their simple and safe ayurvedic treatment in Sanjivani Wellness Centre in Bhilai Chhattisgarh. “DMD is not curable but can be treated to support patient condition” said Dr Mukesh D Jain, Program Director on NMD of Ayush Samiti. Muscular dystrophy is one of the most difficult disorders to treat. Conventional methods of coping with the disease include exercise and drugs that slow down or eliminate muscle wasting like anabolic steroids and supplementation. The current treatment of muscular dystrophies has evolved from electrical simulation to Gene Therapy and Cell Therapy. The goal of the treatment is (i) to correct the genetic defect, (ii) to restore functional expression of dystrophin, (iii) to slow disease progression, and (iv) to improve the quality of life of MD patients. 12. Neuromuscular disabilities are those which affect the muscular and nervous system, causing disturbances in the coordination of limbs, muscular weakness, loss of control over muscles, limited activity, etc. Loss of muscular function and muscular control may lead to spasms and involuntary fits of twitches and stiffening of the muscles.

There are many neuro-muscular diseases about which there is greater confusion and misunderstanding than the triumvirate of progressive muscular dystrophy, progressive muscular atrophy, and arthrogryposis. For example, there is widespread belief that progressive muscular dystrophy is almost universally a rapidly progressive and fatal condition. Likewise, it is commonly believed that one of the varieties of progressive muscular atrophy -amyotonia congenita-is a temporary condition from which the infant or the child gradually recovers. On the other hand, there are those who believe that there is no such clinical condition as amyotonia congenita, and that the disease represents an example of the earlier described progressive muscular atrophy of Werdnig-Hoffmann, which has a dismal prognosis. With respect to arthrogryposis, it is not clearly established whether this condition is a congenital disease of the connective tissue, the muscles, or the nervous system.
Neuro-muscular problems are unlimited. Ayurveda envisages that although the number of diseases may be unlimited, their treatment can be well defined by focusing on their primary causes. Therefore we can fight and win over complex and serious diseases with the help of Ayurveda.
Dr. Mukesh Jain’s ayurvedic programs since 1981 are clinically verified, safe and cost effective. Sanjivani wellness centre is popular among local residents, people from distant cities and even abroad. Dr Jain in association of the Ayush Samiti offers special ayurvedic clinics on Neuro-muscular diseases, Muscular dystrophies, Parkinson’s disease, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and mentally challenged children.
